Montessori Learning Center's Lower Elementary Program

Lower Elementary

A mixed classroom setting for ages 6-9.

Building Community

The Lower Elementary program is for 6 to 9 year olds. Children spend all three years in the same classroom, deepening associations with one another and strengthening relationships with instructors. Elementary-aged children continue to learn through the use of concrete materials, moving slowly toward increasingly abstract thinking. The lessons and materials are multi-sensory, dramatic and evocative, setting alight the imagination and curiosity of the students.

Lower Elementary: A defining period for intellectual exploration

  • Our “Lower El” program combines conventionally aged 1st and 2nd grades in multi-age classrooms, with 3rd grade being added in the 2019 academic school year. This allows students to build social skills in a supportive, respectful environment and to stretch themselves academically—to their full potential.

  • Hands-on math, science and language arts are the cornerstones of our comprehensive Montessori-based Lower El curriculum.

  • Our academic curriculum also aligns with Florida state standards and frameworks—and goes above and beyond. We use the Measures of Academic Progress Test, more commonly known as MAPs testing – to ensure our students are on track.

  • Italian language and integrated cultural studies, including history and geography, promote global awareness and 21st century skills.

  • Physical education and art fortify our curriculum with specialized instructors.

“To stimulate life, leaving it free, however to unfold itself, that is the first duty of the educator.”
